CalSTRS Pension Calculator

Estimate your monthly CalSTRS pension based on your retirement age, years of service, and salary. Our easy-to-use calculator helps you better understand what you could receive in retirement.

Select Your CalSTRS Retirement Formula

Your CalSTRS Retirement Progress report identifies which retirement formula applies to you. Some members hired after 2012 may still qualify for the 2% at 60 formula. If you’re unsure, check your report or contact CalSTRS directly.

Your expected retirement age

Enter your expected retirement age in years and months. Your age determines the percentage used to calculate your pension.

Enter your total years of CalSTRS service credit, including any additional years you expect to earn before retirement. You can include partial years such as 27.5.

Enter your highest average annual salary. CalSTRS uses your highest 12 consecutive months of eligible earnings if you’re under the 2% at 60 formula with at least 25 years of qualifying service credit. Otherwise, it uses your highest 36 consecutive months. For part-time employment, CalSTRS uses the full-time pay rate for your position.

How Your CalSTRS Pension is Calculated

Your CalSTRS pension is based on three factors: your years of service, your retirement age, and your highest average annual salary.

The basic formula is:

Years of Service Credit x Age Factor x Final Compensation = Annual Pension

Your age factor is determined by your retirement age and CalSTRS retirement formula.

2% at 60

  • You can retire with a monthly benefit at age 55 with 5 years of service credit, or at age 50 with 30 years.
  • Your age factor is 2% at age 60 and increases to a maximum of 2.4% at age 63.
  • With 30 or more years of qualifying service credit, you may receive an additional 0.2% career factor, up to the 2.4% maximum.
  • Someone with over 30 years of service could receive the highest multiplier of 2.4% as early as age 61½.
  • With at least 25 years of qualifying service credit, your pension is based on your highest 12 consecutive months of eligible earnings.

2% at 62

  • You can retire with a monthly benefit as early as age 55 with five years of service credit.
  • Your age factor is 2% at age 62 and increases to a maximum of 2.4% at age 65.
  • Your pension is based on your highest 36 consecutive months of eligible earnings.
  • The additional career factor and 12-month salary calculation do not apply.

Where our figures come from

Our calculator uses CalSTRS retirement formulas and published benefit information as of October 5, 2026. Results are estimates and may differ from your actual retirement benefits.

What your estimate doesn’t include

Your estimate is based on the standard CalSTRS pension formula. Your actual retirement benefits may differ based on several factors:

  • Beneficiary options: Choosing to provide continuing benefits for a spouse or another beneficiary may reduce your monthly pension.
  • Additional service credit: Unused sick leave and purchased service credit may increase your retirement benefits if not already included in your calculation.
  • Additional benefits: Certain members may qualify for longevity bonuses or benefits from a separate Defined Benefit Supplement account.
  • Cost-of-living adjustments: CalSTRS provides a 2% annual benefit adjustment (COLA) after retirement, which is not included in this estimate.
  • Taxes and deductions: Your estimate is before income taxes and other applicable deductions.
  • Other retirement income: This does not include Social Security benefits or income from other retirement accounts and investments, such as 403(b)s, 457(b)s, or IRAs.
